RovLocker: Revolutionizing Cargo Delivery with Smart Parcel Lockers

Designed by Togrul Tagizade, Akin Kose and Anil Ercan, RovLocker is a game-changer in the delivery industry.

The inspiration behind RovLocker came from the increasing demands of cargo companies that have to deliver to various addresses daily. The designers aimed to create a solution that would free receivers from being tied to a specific location and provide a 24/7 service to customers. The result is a smart parcel locker that is not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing, enhancing the overall look of public spaces.

What sets RovLocker apart from other parcel lockers is its unique design. The locker consists of two types of modules: main and parcel. The parcel module is assembled using special electromechanical locks, eliminating the need for fasteners on the outer interface. This gives RovLocker a seamless, minimal, and anti-vandal design. Moreover, the locker can be installed in various public areas, as there is no need to reach the back of it during installation, maintenance, or repair.

RovLocker is composed of dozens of designed parts, each developed with the needs of companies and users in mind. The high-security parcel box doors are manufactured using the aluminum injection method, ensuring durability under various conditions. The locker also features diffusers that provide clear user feedback and ensure a homogeneous distribution of light on the part. These are produced using a special thermoplastic resin through plastic injection molding. The locker also includes a special lock system developed to ensure safe delivery to users and companies.

The design process of RovLocker began in January 2018 in Ankara and concluded in September 2018. The locker was first exhibited in October 2018 at the Hamburg Post Expo'18. Since the beginning of 2019, RovLocker has been serving in many places and received the Design Turkey Good Design Award in November 2019.

During the development phase, research was conducted focusing on competing products, cargo companies, user behavior, and public spaces. The findings revealed that competing products struggled to provide easy maintenance and repair while maintaining their anti-vandal structures. RovLocker addressed this issue by simplifying maintenance and repair without compromising on its anti-vandal design. The research also highlighted that security perception was a key concern for users and companies, leading to the design of the locker and its accessories with security in mind.

RovLocker's design faced several challenges, including the need to adapt to various environmental conditions such as rainfall, temperature, UV rays, humidity, and dust. The designers also had to ensure that the locker was aesthetically compatible with different environments and could adapt to different brand identities. Despite these challenges, RovLocker emerged as a successful design, winning the Silver A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2020.
